Screenshot redaction

Redact a screenshot before you share it

Bug reports, support tickets, Slack threads and social posts are full of screenshots with someone's email, a customer name or a live token in the corner. RedactSnap lets you cover them with solid boxes in your browser, and the screenshot never leaves your computer.

What people forget to hide in screenshots

Email addresses and usernames

In browser tabs, account menus, chat headers and "signed in as" banners.

API keys, tokens and URLs

Terminal output, .env files, dashboards and query strings often contain secrets or internal hostnames.

Customer and colleague names

Ticket queues, CRM records, inboxes and @mentions in chat.

Notifications and the status bar

Message previews, calendar alerts and the other open tabs can reveal more than the thing you meant to show.

How to redact a screenshot

  1. 1

Drop the PNG or JPG into the box above. It opens locally in your browser.

  2. 2

Drag a box over each name, email, number or key you want to hide.

  3. 3

Zoom in to check the edges. A few visible pixels of a letter can be enough to guess it.

  4. 4

Download the PNG. The boxes are burned into the pixels, so there is nothing underneath to recover.

Use solid boxes, not blur

Blur and pixelation keep a scrambled version of the original pixels. For short, predictable text like an email address or a number, that can be enough to reconstruct it: open-source tools such as Depix and Unredacter have recovered pixelated text from screenshots.

A solid box replaces the pixels completely. The tool on this page only draws solid boxes. Screenshot Studio also offers blur and pixelate for a softer look, but for anything sensitive, switch it to Blackout.

Why a screenshot shouldn't go to an upload site

If the screenshot needs redacting, it already contains something private. Uploading it to an online editor sends that private information to a server you don't control. RedactSnap does the editing on your device instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I redact a screenshot on my phone?

Yes. RedactSnap runs in mobile Safari and Chrome. Choose the screenshot from your photo library and draw boxes with your finger.

Can RedactSnap find sensitive info in a screenshot automatically?

Partly. Screenshot Studio (redactsnap.com/studio) reads the text in an image on your device and boxes API keys, tokens, card numbers and names for you. It doesn't look for email addresses or phone numbers yet, so check for those and add boxes by hand. The tool on this page uses Smart Scan, which needs a PDF text layer, so on images you draw the boxes yourself.

What file do I get back?

A PNG. The image is redrawn from pixels with your boxes burned in, so nothing under the boxes and none of the original file's metadata, such as EXIF GPS location, is carried over. If you need a PDF instead, there is a "Download as PDF instead" option.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and edited in memory on your device. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side copy. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you redact.
