Passport & ID redaction

Hide your passport number and MRZ before you share a scan

Hotels, employers and online services often ask for a copy of your passport when they only need your name and photo. RedactSnap lets you black out the passport number, machine-readable zone and other details locally. It accepts PDFs, PNGs and JPGs.

Opens in your browser. The file is never uploaded.

What to cover on a passport or ID scan

Machine-readable zone (MRZ)

The two lines of chevrons at the bottom encode your passport number, nationality and date of birth.

Document number

Usually printed top-right on the photo page.

Date of birth and personal number

Hide these unless the recipient needs to verify your age.

Signature

Rarely needed for identity checks.

How to redact a passport scan

  1. 1

Drop your PDF, PNG or JPG into the tool above. Images are converted to PDF locally.

  2. 2

Draw boxes over the MRZ, document number and anything else the recipient doesn't need.

  3. 3

    Export the flattened PDF.

  4. 4

Optionally add "Copy for [purpose] only" on top so the image can't be reused elsewhere.

Passport scans are images, so draw boxes manually

A phone photo or scanner image has no text layer, so automatic detection can't read it. Covering the fields takes about 20 seconds by hand, and you can see exactly what you are hiding.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to redact my passport copy?

Sharing a partially redacted copy of your own passport is generally fine, but the recipient decides whether to accept it. Some regulated checks, such as right-to-work or KYC, need the full document.

Can I redact a JPG or PNG?

Yes. Images are converted to a PDF in your browser and exported as a flattened PDF.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. RedactSnap reads the PDF with your browser's File API and processes it in memory on your device. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side copy of your document. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network tab while you redact.
