EXIF metadata
Remove EXIF data from a photo
Phone photos carry hidden EXIF metadata: often the GPS location where the picture was taken, the date and time, and the phone model. RedactSnap rebuilds the image from its pixels in your browser, so the file you download has none of the original metadata, and the photo is never uploaded.

What EXIF data can reveal
GPS coordinates
Phone cameras with location enabled save where the photo was taken, often precise enough to identify a house.
Date and time
When the picture was taken, down to the second.
Device details
The camera or phone make and model, lens and settings, and on some cameras a serial number.
Embedded thumbnails
Some files keep a small preview of the original image, which can survive crude edits.
How to remove EXIF data
- 1
Drop the JPG or PNG into the box above. It stays on your device.
- 2
Optionally cover faces, plates or addresses with solid boxes.
- 3
Export and download the PNG. It is redrawn from pixels, so none of the original metadata is carried over.
Turning off location for future photos
On iPhone, you can switch location off for one share with Options → Location in the share sheet, or for all photos under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera. On Android, location tags are usually a setting in the camera app. On Windows, File Properties → Details → "Remove Properties and Personal Information" strips metadata from a copy.
Things to know
The download is a PNG, which is usually larger than the original JPG. Each export counts toward the 3 free exports a day. Removing EXIF data doesn't hide what is visible in the picture, such as a street sign or a house number, so look at the image itself too.
Frequently asked questions
Do social networks remove EXIF data?
Many large networks strip it from public uploads, but email attachments, messaging apps sending original-quality files, cloud links and marketplace listings often keep it. Clean the file yourself before sending it.
Can I remove metadata from a PDF too?
Yes. Exported PDFs are rebuilt from flattened pages, and the document info fields are blanked. See the PDF metadata page for details.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is read by your browser and edited in memory on your device. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side copy. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you redact.
