RedactSnap vs Smallpdf
A Smallpdf alternative that never uploads your PDF
Smallpdf is a convenient all-in-one PDF site, and it handles files on its servers. Smallpdf says files from its tools are deleted automatically after about an hour. For the documents you actually need to redact, many people would rather they were never uploaded at all.

Why upload-based tools are a poor fit for redaction
You redact a document because it contains something sensitive. Sending that unredacted document to a third party, even briefly and over TLS, is the step you were trying to avoid. A local tool removes that step entirely.
When Smallpdf is the better choice
If you mostly need to compress, merge, convert or e-sign non-sensitive PDFs, Smallpdf's broad toolset is convenient. RedactSnap focuses only on redaction.
Frequently asked questions
Does Smallpdf keep my files?
Smallpdf states that files processed by its tools are automatically deleted after about one hour, and that files saved to an account stay until you delete them. See Smallpdf's own security page for current details.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. RedactSnap reads the PDF with your browser's File API and processes it in memory on your device. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side copy of your document. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network tab while you redact.
Is the redaction permanent or just a black box on top?
Permanent. A black rectangle drawn in an ordinary PDF editor can be copied around or deleted, leaving the text underneath readable. RedactSnap exports every page as a flattened image, so the original text layer, fonts and hidden objects are not carried into the file you download.
