Photo privacy

Remove personal info from a photo before you post or send it

A photo can reveal more than you meant to show: a house number, a licence plate, a letter on the table, and the GPS coordinates of where it was taken. RedactSnap lets you cover what's visible and gives you back a file without the original metadata, all in your browser.

PDF, PNG or JPG

Opens in your browser. The file is never uploaded.

What to check before sharing a photo

Location in the metadata

Phone cameras usually save GPS coordinates in the file's EXIF data. The exported file is rebuilt from pixels, so that data is not carried over.

Faces and children

Cover the faces of people who haven't agreed to be in a public post.

Plates, house numbers and street signs

Together they can pinpoint where you live or park.

Documents, screens and badges in the background

Mail, boarding passes, ID badges and laptop screens are often readable in a high-resolution photo.

How to remove personal info from a photo

  1. 1

Drop the JPG or PNG into the box above. It opens locally in your browser.

  2. 2

Zoom in and scan the background as well as the subject.

  3. 3

Drag a solid box over each face, plate, address or document.

  4. 4

Download the PNG. Your boxes are burned in, and the original EXIF location data is not carried over.

Do social networks remove the location for me?

Many large social networks strip EXIF data from public uploads, but email attachments, messaging apps sending "original quality", cloud-drive links and marketplace listings often keep it. Don't rely on the destination to clean the file.

Why not use an online photo editor?

Photos of your home, your car or your children are exactly what you shouldn't hand to an unknown server. RedactSnap edits the photo on your device and never uploads it.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats are supported?

JPG and PNG. iPhone photos in HEIC format can be shared as JPG from the Photos app (choose "Most Compatible" under Settings → Camera → Formats, or export as JPEG).

What file do I get back?

A PNG. The image is redrawn from pixels with your boxes burned in, so nothing under the boxes and none of the original file's metadata, such as EXIF GPS location, is carried over. If you need a PDF instead, there is a "Download as PDF instead" option.

Can RedactSnap find sensitive info in a screenshot automatically?

Partly. Screenshot Studio (redactsnap.com/studio) reads the text in an image on your device and boxes API keys, tokens, card numbers and names for you. It doesn't look for email addresses or phone numbers yet, so check for those and add boxes by hand. The tool on this page uses Smart Scan, which needs a PDF text layer, so on images you draw the boxes yourself.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and edited in memory on your device. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side copy. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you redact.
